A community-driven, service sewing day
By Chicago Sews September 30, 2025

Mark your calendars and thread your needles — November 15 is set to be a special day for makers, sewists, and community–minded creatives everywhere. The Black Sewing Network is spearheading a National Community Service Sewing Day, during which sewing groups across the country will host events to support local charities, community organizations, and individuals in need.
Why a National Sewing Day?
In a world of mass production and fast fashion, the act of sewing remains deeply personal, creative, and community-oriented. A dedicated day of sewing service is a chance to:
- Mobilize sewing skills for meaningful impact
- Raise awareness about textile waste, upcycling, and repair
- Strengthen connections between sewing groups and local nonprofit initiatives
- Inspire novices and seasoned makers alike to give back through craft
Black Sewing Network, a platform that celebrates and amplifies Black voices in the sewing community, regularly organizes sewalongs, tutorials, and community-building initiatives. This upcoming day of national service will be a showcase of how sewing communities can rally together for good.
What To Expect
On November 15, sewing groups from Philly, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Florida, Baltimore and Montserrat in the Caribbean will be gathering locally for community service projects tied to sewing. Each city will host something unique — from making garments for those in need to fundraising for local causes.
Local Event Spotlight
Chicago Sews is participating in this first time nationwide sewing service day! We are holding a Mend-A-Thon on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM CST at the Skokie Public Library. This is our way of plugging into this national movement.
Deets on the Mend-A-Thon Please!

Join Chicago Sews for our first-ever community service event! 🧵 Bring along your well-loved clothes that need a little TLC — whether it’s a missing button, a small tear, or a loose seam, we’ll help you bring them back to life.
👕 Examples of What to Bring:
- Shirts with loose or missing buttons (bring your buttons)
- Pants with busted belt loops that need to be secured
- A small blanket with a hole that needs patching
- Jackets with worn or torn seams
- A ripped pillowcase
- Any basic wearable item that could use a stitch or two of love
🎉 Why Come?
- Reduce waste & save your favorite clothes
- Connect with neighbors and friends
- You’ve been putting off “find a seamstress” long enough
- Indulge our sewists’ itch-to-stitch and creativity!
What’s more? It’s free! Just bring your items and a smile. We’ll provide basic supplies, fabric remnants, our sewing machines, and the experience to restore your items to “good as new”. 😊
Let’s come together, stitch by stitch, to build a more sustainable (and stylish!) community!
The Bigger Picture
National Community Service Sewing Day isn’t just about stitches and seams—it’s about connecting creativity to causes. It’s an opportunity to:
- Bring together diverse sewing communities under a common mission
- Highlight the value of repairing and upcycling, for sustainable practices
- Provide functional, heartfelt support to people and organizations in need
- Inspire new sewists to see their skills as tools for change
When thousands of hands come together—threading needles, stitching seams, mending hearts—that’s powerful. 🫶
We are excited to be a part of this and we hope to see you on November 15th!
