Every year, Chicago Sews hosts a project that challenges us, excites us, and brings our community closer together. In 2024, it was bomber jackets with the unforgettable #WeSewBombers collaboration. This year, we’re stepping into new territory with a garment that’s both iconic and endlessly customizable: the trench coat.
Welcome to “Trenched in Style,” our 2025 sew-along!

The trench coat has a rich history, from its early military use to its adoption as a fashion statement. Today, it’s a wardrobe essential that can be dressed up or down, worn across seasons, and made in everything from crisp cotton to shimmering silk. For sewists, it’s a dream project:

Looking Back: #WeSewBombers
Chicago Sews is built on the idea that sewing together creates more than garments — it creates community. Last year’s #WeSewBombers sew-along, in partnership with We Sew Austin, was proof of that. Participants blew us away with their creativity: minimalist monochrome jackets, patchwork statement pieces, embroidered flourishes, and so much more.
That project reminded us that a pattern is just a starting point. Your fabric choices, your adjustments, and your story turn it into something unique. With “Trenched in Style,” we’re carrying that same spirit forward — and widening the circle of collaboration.
What to Expect
The sew-along officially kicked off last Friday, October 3, at our October Sip & Sew. At this gathering, we shared inspiration, talked about pattern and fabric choices, and help set the stage for the months ahead.
In the comin weeks here’s what you can look forward to:
- Regular Check-Ins: Virtual sip-and-sew evenings and open sewing sessions.
- Community Discussion: Our online Frockroom will be open for participants to chat, share progress, and coordinate sewing dates with friends.
- Creative Freedom: Whether your trench is sleek and traditional or playful and avant-garde, you’ll be celebrated for bringing your vision to life.
Not planning to sew a trench coat this year? That’s okay! You’re still welcome at our events — bring whatever project you’re working on. The goal is connection.
